We arrived promptly for the match and were a bit disappointed to only be able to get on the pitch about 10mins before we started. We improvised and did a good carpark warmup!
We started well, the teams were quite evenly matched, we welcomed a few new players and settled into the game well. We had a few shorts but we failed to score. Nikki, Laura and Zoe were great switching around the back, it was strong and positive, but our link up play up the pitch was quite interrupted with lots of back and forth play. Rach made a few cracking saves, down low then tipping the ball over the cross bar!
One of the umpires was not our friend, inconsistently/incorrectly calling play which led to play being broken down with us being impeded and not really being able break. Kate got frustrated with this (as did Helen and others) and was invited to take a 2 min time out with a green card!
Half Time 0-0
At half time we talked about keeping our heads and making sure we defended the middle where most of their pressure was coming we did this much better with Laura and Zoe advising where the midfield should stand allowing a more effective press.
2 mins into the second half the other ref gave a green card to player that was fouling Kate and kept repeated warning them and the others - justice! 15 mins in they scored, a strike from the top of the D which Rach saved initially but rebounded straight back and their second strike went in. We continued the pressure with silky runs from Helen, good support play and effort from all but we couldn’t equalise final score 1-0 to Old B’s 2.
It was a disappointing match, hard to loose 1-0, but at teas we had some positive conversations about what we could do at training to help improve our match play, so some good things to put in practice.
Also positive no serious injuries, Nikki's toe is sore, Zoe's bruised chin and Kate’s ball to the arm, but all good!
POTM went to Rach, some outstanding saves had both teams commenting! Votes also to Rach, Nikki, and Helen
Captains player to Zoe in defence~ had a great game stopping loads of players getting in our D and putting her body on the line for Wick, some very close saves near the line!!
Donkey goes to Katie!
Well done ladies! We keep going, training and playing as a team!
