About the team

What is 'Back to Hockey'?

Back to Hockey is an opportunity for women of all ages and abilities to get involved in the wonderful game of hockey. Whether you previously played hockey and haven't for a while, or haven't played since school, this is a chance to learn some new skills, make some new friends and fall back in love with the sport. Following on from the first 3 sessions, if you want to play more, Wick will incorporate you into 3rd team, training on Tuesdays at Fairfield School from 7pm - 8.30pm.

What do I need to bring with me?

If you don't have a stick - don't worry! We have plenty of spare sticks and you can wear any sports trainers for your first few practices. We do recommend getting some shin pads, as the ball does hurt if it lands on your shin. If you intend to stay on playing hockey we do recommend buying and bringing your own gum shield, astros, shin pads and hockey gloves. We can help by recommending the best places to go and you can usually get a discount on kit from shops by being a member of the club.

I am a shift worker- can I still join the club?

Yes, of course! In an ideal world we would like players to attend every training session and be available for league games, but unlike other hockey clubs, we understand that this isn't always possible. As long as you show commitment and passion to the sport, we don't mind.

What's it like to play for Wick Ladies?

A word from our 3rd Team Captain, Becca:

"I joined the club in 2021 after a change in circumstances left me looking for a way to reconnect with people and get back into sport. I hadn’t played hockey in over 20 years and, honestly I had no idea what I was doing when I first picked up a stick again.

From the start, I enjoyed the training sessions, and the welcoming atmosphere. Fast forward to now and I’m SO proud to be captain of the 3rd team and play alongside a great bunch of teammates, many of whom have become close friends.

It’s been a fun journey, and I’m so glad I took that first step back onto the pitch with Wick!"
